When I was part of a family owned business and took part in hiring and firing employees, I would make the observation that you might have to kiss quite a few frogs before finding a prince (or princess) when hiring someone.
I am now on the other side of the fence and have been an employee for quite a few years. My frogs that I am kissing now are the employers. I am here to tell you that there have been very few princes or princesses over the years and there have been quite a few frogs. Yes, I have tried to look back and honestly look at my faults and performances at my past positions to see if somehow I was at fault and these froggy like employers were actually a prince or a princess. However, when I look back, I remembered that one of my employers got drunk on dirty martini's while working and started getting very mean with me. Then there was the time I came a upon a doctor that I worked for, who was married to a lovely woman, canoodling with the male x-ray tech in one of the cubicles in the office. Last but not least, at my last position, my desk was gone through by the operations manager every other day, things taken off my desk without letting me know, e-mails deleted and my own private belongings taken off my desk. Oh, yeah, I worked in a x-ray closet! Almost the entire staff was related to one another. The guy that mowed the lawn was related and so was the the cleaning staff. The operations manager was the daughter of the administrator. There was really no where to go. I would go to the administrator about this and she told me that her daughter, the operations manager, had previously schemed to get her job and actually had achieved that goal. The administrator retired and then was asked back because her daughter, the operations manager, was acting paranoid and making mountains out of mole hills. The administrator felt that her daughter was this way because she did not have any children. The administrator confided that her daughter was currently scheming yet once again. She also said that because of what I went through, that I would get unemployment benefits even though I resigned. She then asked me not to throw her under the bus. Did I get unemployment benefits? NO! I applied for the benefits, but did not appeal. I really did not want to have anything more to do with these people and go through a hearing. Did I throw the administrator under the bus? NO! Who knows, I still might contact a bus company.
The only good thing about resigning from my last job, I was able to spend more time with a dying family member. After a year, I am now looking for a position again. It is not a good economy and I believe I will have difficulty in finding a job because if the above event.
We need better labor laws in Florida. We are a "Right to Work State." As one of the employers I worked for would announce to the whole office, "I can fire you for the color of your hair if I want to and not tell you why I am going to fire you!!"
From now on, I will not be a victim. I will be firm about expecting respect from my employer. I have a right to work in a place that is safe, secure, ethical, trustworthy and professional. I am also going to ask questions so as to interview my prospective employer during any upcoming interviews. Remember, it goes both ways!! No more warty frogs for me!!!!!!!!!!!
To all employers and employees: BE PROFESSIONAL AND ETHICAL!!!!!
I will let you know how my job hunting is doing in future musings.
